Dr Phil Wells has had a career dominated by research and administration. He has held appointments as Program Director, Division Chief in Hematology, Director of Clinical Research at the OHRI and most recently as the Chief/Chair of the Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa. Now in the late stages of his career, he is turning back to research and is fortunate to have a Distinguished Research Chair. He came on Faculty at UO in 1994 and established the Thrombosis Treatment and Assessment Unit at The Ottawa Hospital, now the largest thrombosis clinical practice and clinical research unit in the world. He is best known for pioneering the concept of clinical prediction rules to assist in the diagnosis of patients with suspected deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism. For each of these diseases he embodied these prediction rules in valuable algorithms now known as the “Wells Model for DVT” and the “Wells Model for PE”. The algorithms are currently taught and used world-wide in the diagnostic process for these illnesses and are incorporated into many National and Organizational guidelines. He also was one of the first physicians to treat DVT and PE on an outpatient basis. His current interests are Cancer Associated Thrombosis and in promoting the use of AI to improve or develop clinical predictive analytics. He has received over $38 million in peer reviewed research funding and has over 460 publications.
